“Survey of Japanese Companies in Southern California”
JBA (Japan Business Association of Southern California) and JETRO Los Angeles (Japan External
Trade Organization) is pleased to release our survey of “Japanese Companies in Southern
California.” This survey, our eighth of its type, is conducted every two years. The results of the
survey are based on the questionnaire asking Japanese companies in Southern California their
business condition as of December 31, 2007.
Here is Key findings:
1. There are 1,185 Japanese companies in Southern California. These Japanese companies
contribute significantly to the local community in terms of employment, payroll, etc.
- When the estimated total employment number is calculated by multiplying the number of
employees per company (141 persons) responding to the survey with the number of companies
in the region (1,185), the total number of employees at Japanese companies in the region is
estimated to be 167,183. The ratio of locally hired staff reached 97.2%. As for the
increase/decrease in the job numbers in 2007 compared to the previous year, there were more
Japanese companies whose employment increased than Japanese companies whose employment
decreased.
- When the average amount paid per employee ($79,000) is multiplied with the estimated total
number of employees, the total payroll is estimated to be $13.2 billion.
- Over 90 percent of the companies surveyed provided healthcare insurance for their employees,
suggesting that Japanese companies provide superior healthcare benefits to their employees.
2. Although the short-term outlook of business performance decreased slightly due to the
uncertain outlook for the future U.S. economy, the long-term outlook is still positive.
- Majority of the companies (57.3%) surveyed continue to have a positive business outlook
concerning the future. However, the overall forecast of operating income in the short term (one
to two years) dropped slightly due to the uncertainty of the U.S. economy, etc.
3. The advantages of California included “size of market” and “transportation hub,” among
others. The disadvantages included “labor costs,” “tax burden,” “security,”
“import/export procedures,” etc.
- “Size of market” cited by more than a half (50.4%) of respondents continued to be the greatest
advantage of Southern California. This was followed by “transportation hub” (46.4%), “climate”
(41.3%), and “size of the Japanese community” (36.3%).
- More than a half (50.4%) of the respondents cited “labor costs” as a major negative, followed by
“tax burden” (44.0%), “security” (26.3%), “import/export procedures:” (24.8%), and “driver’s
license issuance” (22.1%).
